Effective April 1, 2014, with an implementation requirement of no later than July 1, 2014, for MCOs, Health and Behavioral Assessment and Intervention codes have been turned on by Texas Medicaid for certain populations.
The Health and Behavioral Assessment and Intervention codes (sometimes abbreviated HABI, HBAI, or H&B, including codes 96150 - 96155) are now an available benefit for clients "20 years of age and younger when the services are provided by a licensed practitioner of the healing arts (LPHA) who is co-located in the same office or building complex as the client's primary care provider (PCP)," (TMHP, 2014).
The codes, which can be applied to do behavioral assessment and intervention with medically ill patients, include:
Procedure code 96150 -- Limited to a maximum of four 15-minute units (one hour) per client, per rolling 180 days, any provider
Procedure code 96151 -- Limited to a maximum of four 15-minute unites (one hour) per client, per rolling 180 days, any provider
Procedure codes 96152, 96153, 96154, 96155 -- Limited to a maximum of sixteen 15-minute unites (four hours), per client, per rolling 180 days, any provider
Additional details about the requirements for billing for this procedure can be found here and here.
The BHACA Initiative provided a related webinar in October 2014 regarding the patchwork of newly "turned on" codes that may be applied to bill for integrated health care services in the public system in Texas, which would include these HABI codes. An archived video of this webinar, during which Kathleen (Kathy) Reynolds, LMSW, ACSW, Vice President for Health Integration and Wellness with The National Council for Behavioral Health, can be found on BHACA's YouTube channel here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSUI3yl3ito.
Please feel invited to send the BHACA team an email with any related questions or with any information that might be helpful to area behavioral health providers. Elizabeth can be reached by email at [email protected].
Thanks and happy billing!,
